Summary:

Vinny Golia is one of the reigning kings of free improvisation in the Los Angeles area, and beyond. He also teaches at CalArts, including leading a large improvising ensemble of students.

What a great first event for us to see! Vinny and the gang were in great form, taking things just slightly "inside" with a number of written compositions using metered time, but still with lots of room for the free improvisation for which they are so well-known, as well as free stretches unto themselves, and mostly continuous segues from piece to piece. The weather was warm, but cooled nicely in the dusk, and there was a fine turnout.
