Summary: Jim Carney is a progressive jazz pianist and composer with an impressive mixture of sophisticated compositions, facile technique and exploratory improvisation in his music. He directs his group with a sense of relaxed exploration, sometimes reaching out to fully unstructured improvisation, always with a collective breath to the ensemble. In the trio, Dan Lutz on bass is rock-solid and consistently engaging, while Deron Johnson brings an intense but nuanced touch to the drums. For this gig Jim added tenor sax and trumpet. It was a real treat to hear this gig -- Jim and the band played really well, showing off his compositions with greater tone color and making some real music with some fine musicians. The crowd was compact but enthusiastic, and our contingent provided a solid core to the audience. Most of us had dinner afterward at La Serenata restaurant on Pico -- a good choice for Mexican food! -- Dan Krimm [New Music TBD] - Home |
