About [New Music TBD] [New Music TBD] of Los Angeles is a community of New Music fans who meet periodically at live performances of New Music. We welcome anyone from New Music experts to novices to get together at New Music performances for a social occasion with a like-minded group of people to share, learn and explore the wide variety of New Music being created and performed in the Los Angeles area. What is New Music? For our purposes, "New Music" covers a lot of ground, including everything from post-classical/academic works to electro-acoustic and live electronic music, free improvisation and progressive/avant garde jazz, experimental world/ethnic music, ambient/minimalist music, multimedia and interactive sound installations, etc. -- pretty much anything of a type that has a hard time finding expression in the standard channels of mainstream and traditional music markets. (Note: That means that we are not specifically interested in new/unknown acts that play conventional or traditional music of some kind. The pop-music business typically refers to that as "new music" but it is not what we are after, unless it is also basically experimental in its approach.) Meeting Format Currently we just meet informally at performances of interest to our members. (We began by organizing group "hangs" that were advertised on our web site and in our discussion list, but our resources can't support that right now, so anything that happens along these lines emerges purely from individual members.) Online Community We also communicate with each other via an email discussion group and a concert blog. People who want to contact each other "offline" are obviously free to do so as well. Launching Pad We hope that members of this group will find performances of interest and get out to some of them on their own. Our intent is for the web site and the community interactions to help people find more of what they are looking for in the New Music realm, and to break down the barriers that keep people from actually getting out to hear it live.
