Dorothy Grossman and Friends at The Jazz Bakery, 7/18/04 The Dorothy Grossman gig yesterday at The Jazz Bakery was excellent. She recited a number of her poems. She also read a few poems of Henny Youngman, whom she mentioned as a being a primary inspiration of hers. The trio (Michael Vlatkovich - trombone, Jeff Kaiser - trumpets, Tom McNalley-guitar) improvised responses to each poem, in various groupings and as soloists. There was much use of extended techniques, including the use of unusual items for mutes, jangling of mutes, double reeds, dismantling of the horns, the Henny Youngman Sparkling Water mute (for trumpet mouthpiece), and some perceptive vocal nuance. Both the poems and the responses were brief, giving the show a lot of room for variety in mood and texture. The rapport among the musicians was excellent. The camaraderie on the stage was joyful. The audience response was warm and receptive. A great gig.. bruce friedman
